Free update to Windows 10

Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 10 will be released TODAY and it is FREE to users with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 installed on their devices.

Windows 10 addresses the issues that put users off Windows 10 and reports from testers are mostly very positive.  This is also the last major release of a Microsoft operating system, upgrades will be much smaller, incremental changes from here on, so upgrading is an option well worth considering.

The hardware needed for Windows 10 is similar to that needed to run Windows 7 & 8.

The free upgrade requires users to register, which is done by clicking the Windows icon showing at the bottom right hand corner.  The registration must be done within a year of the release of Windows 10 & can be done now.  It is very simple & does not require filling out lots of details.

The update will be downloaded once available ( it is a big download) and you will be notified it is available for installation.  You can delay the installation.

I would not recommend installing it until has been out for a little while, although this version of Windows has been well tested before release there are bound to be some teething problems which will be sorted out in the firat month or two.

The same Windows 10 system wll be used across PCS, notebooks, Tablets & Smartphones

Windows 10 is Microsoft's latest operating system & follows Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8 and 8.1.

Windows 8 was not a big hit with the public & Microsoft has brought out a new version of Windows to try to answer all the critics.  For Windows 10 they have taken good ideas from all over the place and made what looks like a very good version of Windows. They have brought back a Start menu and users no longer end up in Apps with no apparent way to escape!  It is also supposed to be the most secure Windows ever.  Cortana, the new digital assistant in Windows 10 is not available in NZ as yet.

Windows 10 will be the same across PCs, notebooks, Tablets & smartphones,so it will be learn to use it once then use any device.  Microsoft will also be upgrading it in a constant process, so there should be no sudden major changes as there were from Windows 7 to Windows 8, to leave users wondering how to use their computer.

The only major hiccup to Windows 10 is that updates are compulsory, users can no longer choose to no accept updates.  Older hardware like printers could also be a problem .

All in all Windows 10 looks like a winner for Microsoft.  As I said in an earlier blog, the upgrade is free for owners of devices with genuine Windows 7 or 8.1 installed. It can be installed as an upgrade or it is possible to download a cful copy and install that.

Be careful though - make sure you have a full backup of your device as it may not be possible to roll it back to Windows 7 or 8.1, even if you have a restore or recovery option on your PC.

I would certainly be waiting a few weeks before upgrading, unless you qualify for the upgrade and your PC needs work anyway.
